2 or 3 Edmonton movers
I will start by putting this out there. There is some annoying math in this article. If this is little too much, which it really may be, please read this first section then skip to the section at the bottom. This IS how you can judge how many movers you need with any Edmonton company, however the whole formula is an explanation of how our 2 to 3 man price ratio makes your move more affordable than other Edmonton movers. This is the major difference between us and the other professional level moving companies.
Think about it... 3 things
1. Movers get paid for the amount of hours that are on your bill. Every company I or any of my employees ever worked for pays this way, that is the first thing I changed when I went independent, but there is more about that later.
2. Movers for many companies will not work as hard on a 6 hour day as they would if they knew they would make enough that day. This sounds really bad, I know, but I have worked for a lot of companies with a lot of movers and when you have 3 guys on a supposed huge house and when you get there it is half empty, believe me that mover was counting on those hours. (why Edmonton moving companies will send 3 guys or push them on you is explained further toward the bottom of the page)
To explain # 2 further
Lets say that you make 20 dollars an hour. Now you get to work and there's say 6 or 7 hours all together. You get paid by the hour. How hard are you going to work? If it takes 8 hours it may be worth coming in that day. Now lets say there is 10 hours of work. Would you keep a better pace throughout the day knowing that you will make enough money? Now you want to be home on time...
3. Here comes the math...The 6 and 9 hour rule
For the purpose of this example lets use 120/hr for 2 men, and 150/hr for 3. This is just slightly lower average pricing for a professional Edmonton moving company.
The 3rd man on a crew is typically 30 dollars an hour more. In theory, the job should take 2/3 of the time and the 3rd guy is at half the rate of the other 2 right?
So a job that's 9 hrs with 2 men is; 120/hr x 9hrs = $1080.
With 3 men the same move should be 6hrs x 150 = $900.
Should be cheaper right? Wrong.
First lets put the hour of travel in... (standard charge all Edmonton movers)
2 men - 120/hr x (9hrs + 1hr) = $1200.
With 3 - 150/hr x (6hrs + 1hr)hrs = $1050.
Now factor in say an extra hour that 3 guys will take as mentioned above...
with 3 - 150/hr x 8hrs = $1200.
Its the exact same price.
And this is your answer.
Anything more than 10 total hours with 2 men will be more cost effective with 3.
Anything 6 or 7 hours and under with 3 men will be more cost effective with 2.
This rule is not perfect, but a guideline only. Read below to see how at Pro Service Moving we take advantage of this principle to offer a guaranteed better value.
Quick math to back this formula up.
1.more than 9 hours with 2 men
a job that would take 12 hours with 2 men;
12hrs x 120/hr = $1440 plus travel is $1560.
with 3 men (because there is enough hours in the day so they all work hard) is 2/3 the time;
8hrs x 150/hr = $1200 plus travel is $1350.
Cheaper with 3 movers.
2.Less than 9 hours with 2 men
A job that is say 6hrs with 2 men.
6hrs x 120/hr =$720 plus travel is $840.
with 3 men (not enough hours for 3) so factor in that extra hour again...
5.0hrs x 150/hr plus travel = $900.
More with 3 movers.
This is the part that varies. It depends entirely on the quality of the company. The best Edmonton moving companies will not slow down and you will get your moneys worth. The bad ones will absolutely cost you more.
Why do moving companies sometimes push the extra mover?
There are a few different reasons for this. Sometimes a larger company will try to keep more movers working during slow periods so that they do not have to re hire when business picks up. Sometimes a company that runs say 3 trucks and crews, but legitimately do a lot of larger house moves so they do need that 3rd mover on every crew.
What you are looking out for is the moving company that pushes the 3rd man because it is an easier sale. It makes perfect sense that you would save money with an extra guy for less, but some companies make more money this way.
This is the reason that we offer very low 2 man rates, it is to have a guarantee.
How we use this formula to give our customers a guaranteed affordable move
At Pro Service Moving we drop our 2 man rate to $100/hr regularly. The advantage of this is that in the event a bill gets a little more than expected, it really doesn't cost us much to lower the rate even further to keep the move affordable. This does not happen with other companies.
That same example above with us would still beat any other professional moving company in Edmonton. (example below) We can do this because we simply have lower operating costs. It is easy to drop the rate and easy to hand out deals.The same example as above with our rate;
6hrs x 100/hr = $600 plus travel = $700. (Pro Service Moving)
4hrs x 150/hr = $600 plus travel = $750. (other company assuming they did not slow down)
Keeping in mind that the movers who care enough to not make sure they get hours, also charge more than $150/hr for 3 men.
