Moving can be stressful, which can have you looking for relief anywhere and any way you can get it. One of the best ways to get some stress relief and delegate your moving tasks is to hire a moving company. But not all moving companies are looking to help you. Some are looking to take advantage. These types of movers are categorically known as scam artists. Unfortunately, ‘scam movers’ may be just as prevalent as reputable movers, so you must be vigilant. Being vigilant means looking out for the signs of moving company scams.
The Company Doesn’t have a Website, Online Presence or Reviews
Today, every serious, reputable company has a website and online presence. Movers who aren’t scammers can be found on social media sites or contacted through their business website. Additionally, their sites and social media pages will include information about their company and ways to contact customer service. For experienced companies, an online presence is usually combined with online customer reviews. Positive reviews build credibility, which most businesses are looking for. Just be on the lookout for overwhelmingly positive reviews or those that just seem inauthentic. Bad movers or scammers may hire others to write glowing reviews about their services.
The Price is Too Good to Be True
Many experienced movers offer fair prices and good deals. But there are some prices that are just too good to believe. If a price is too low, then the company probably charges hidden fees or offers terrible service. Always ask for a rate quote and contract that details everything you’re paying for and includes contingency clauses. Common contingencies include: a limit on the loading route, stairs, narrow door openings and passageways and limits on load capacities. Reliable movers will always present you with an exact quote, moving plan, contract, receipt and no hidden fees. On the other hand, scammers often won’t present a contract, then charge for contingencies.
Don’t Provide a Move Coordinator
For reputable movers, a Move Coordinator or Office Manager is essential to providing positive customer experiences. The coordinator often works as a liaison between the homeowner and the movers – a much needed liaison. They schedule the move, make sure the movers arrive on time, reschedule the move if needed, make any applicable special arrangements and basically ensure your move goes smoothly. Not every reputable company offers this service, unfortunately, but it could be a bonus and an added layer of security. Another layer of security is to check for licensing and Better Business Bureau registration. Move coordinator or not, a company that isn’t licensed or registered with the proper government entities is probably not very reliable.
